The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, originally created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The music was done by Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The line are taken from the story book “Nutcracker and the mouse king” written by E.T.A Hoffman. Marilinsky theatre in St. Petersburg held its premier on Sunday, 18th of December year 1892, on a double show with Lolanta, which is a Tchaikovsky’s opera. Origin
The original production of this show did not turn out to be such a success but even then Tchaikovsky extracted a twenty minute ballet suite from the show and that was pretty huge success and gained a lot of fame. First Performance
The first performance of this ballet was double premiered at the imperial Marrinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, along with Lolanta, Tchaikovsky's last opera, on the 18th of December in the year 1982.Petipa began the work on the choreography of this play in august 1982, Even though the libretto was by pepita as he choreographed the first production, which has also been debated a lot. But the illness of Pepita kept him away from the completion of this play. Lev Ivanov came into picture to complete The Nutcracker. Lev Ivanov was petipa’s assistant for over seven years was now taking care of the Nutcracker. He is often credited as the choreographer of the ballet but the main contemporary accounts roll in the favor of petipa. The roles of the children in the ballet are performed by real adults rather than children themselves, except than the first performance. Tradition
In 1930's the Nutcracker made its way to Western Europe and to America by 1940, done by Ballet Russe. San Francisco Ballet performed the first American full length Nutcracker, choreographed by W. Christensen. The Nutcracker has since then become an annual Holiday tradition.
